General ball stud specification covers the engineering requirements for cold headed and machined ball stud utilized in automotive steering and suspension assemblies.
Application requirements:
1. Stud design and size selection criteria shall be per SAE J491.
2. Raw Material quality, test method specification, mechanical testing, hardenability tests.
3. Forming and machining, ball stud threads must be "roll formed", cut threads are not permissible.
4. Heat treatment, induction hardening, case hardening, effective case depth, total case, core hardness, surface hardness, microhardness, and microstructure.
5. Finished condition, the surface finish parameters shall be specified on the print. the taper blueing percent contact criterion shall be 60%.
6. Mechanical testing are as follows: Impact resistance, fracture, yield and rotary fatigue test .
