Brown aluminum oxide abrasive is electrically fused in an arc furnace from a mixture of bauxite, coke (anthracite) as main raw materials at high temperature. Its chemical composition contains Al(2)O(3), TiO(2), a small amount of SiO2, and Fe(2)O(3), etc., microhardness: 1800-2200Kg/mm^2, toughness: higher than siliconcarbide. Abrasive articles made of it are suited for grinding metals of high-tensile strength such as steel, annealed malleable iron and hard high-class refractory products.
